MODERN HOME BUILT IN SIXTEEN HOURS
RICH COLOUR-SCHEMES ADVERTISING EXHIEIT To build a modern four-roomed bungalow in brick in less than a day, was the task confronting nine labourers who commenced work at the Advertising Club’s Exhibition on Sunday evening. Largely owing to the efficient organisation of the Fletcher Construction Co., the work was ready for the decorator to commence work at 4.30 yesterday afternoon. Nearly 45ft long by 26ft wide, the house contains 3,000 bricks, supplied by the Glenburn Fireclay and Pottery Co. Above are broad eaves with a wide, green, barge-board, the whole being surmounted by a roof of the Marseilles tiles made by Winstones, Ltd. In the entrance hall is a Persian rug of bright hues, which is supported by a panelled wallpaper. A fine oak grandfather clock modifies the brightness of the rug and papers. Two large rooms are furnished in characteristic style as drawing-room and living-room. In the drawing room the scheme is light, the predominating colours being green and orange. The furniture is mahogany. including a Columbia gramophone. A tapestried three-piece suite and upright grand piano in rosewood complete the furnishing. Panelled papers of a light shade, with upright decorations, denote the acme of the decorator's art. Curtains of light green support the life of the papers, a light-beamed ceiling completing the effect. IN THE DINING-ROOM Rich blue and dull gold predominate in the dining-room, where the furniture is of mahogany in Queen Anne style. John Henderson, Ltd., who decorated the cottage with papers supplied by Smith dnd Smith, Ltd., put up in this room a paper of fawn and old gold, harmonising perfectly with the rich blue carpet square put down by Andrews and Clark, who were responsible for all the furnishing. Dominating the room is a broad marble fireplace, manufactured by the New Zealand Marble Co, Curtains of blue effect were made to lit the wide French doors and match the colour scheme of the whole. Softening the colours of the room, an amber globe shining in a crystal chandalier sheds a soft radiance which is reflected by the glittering cut glass and silver on the dining- table. Enamelled in white, the kitchenette contains every convenience, including even a marmalade cutter. Also enamelled, the bathroom is an excellent example of the beauty of porcelain and nickel. Special pains have been taken with the bedroom, which is executed in a colour scheme of delicate petunia and green. On the floor a square of the chosen colours is bordered by green felt. Mahogany furniture of Queen Anne style is again used, the fiddled ends of the bedstead being particularly attractive. In a corner of the dining room, Auckland’s “model home” newspaper, The Sun, is grouped among all the other necessities for comfortable home life.
