FARMERS WANT CHEAPER PHONES
ZONE SYSTEM URGED MEETING AT HAMILTON (From Our Own Correspondent) HAMILTON, To-day. The introduction of a zone system of telephone charges in rural districts has been discussed by the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, and will probably be discussed further at the annual conference of the Auckland branch of the union, which opens at Hamilton to-day. The conference will continue until the end of the week. The union had previously suggested that such a system would increase the number of subscribers, and afford cheaper services to users, without in any way affecting the revenue of the department. In a letter received at a meeting of the executive yesterday, the secretary of the Postal Department said that the present conditions and charges were instituted only after very careful consideration. The facilities were' considered to be the best devised to meet conditions in New Zealand, and it was not considered expedient to institute the zone system.
