MOTOR DRIVERS’ LICENCES
Sir, As a layman and in view of the decision of Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., concerning registration of cars, one feels diffident in approaching the matter, but it seems to me if Mr. Luxford is right that drivers’ licences (by virtue of subsection 5 of section 12 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1927) issued in 1927, can, like the brook, go on for ever, then the owners of motor-vehicles are in the same happy position in regard to the licence for the vehicle—vide sub-section 4 of section 7 of the Act quoted above. And while agreeing with Mr. Luxford’s opinion, I think the part that really matters is sub-section 3 of section 7 and sub-section 3 of section 12 of the same Act which, if my interpretation is correct, give local bodies power still to collect the fees as before, even though no license is issued. And this is in the nature of things as one cannot imagine a law draughtsman allowing a fee of any kind to slip past him. WILL A. CARTER. Mt. Eden.
