TENNIS CLUB BALL
AT PAPATOETOE With a brilliant canopy of multicoloured streamers, and thousands of gay balloons, the Papatoetoe Town Hall made a pretty setting for the many daintily-gowned dancers who were present last evening at the Papatoetoe Tennis Club’s annual ball and presentation of prizes. Messrs. R. G. Ross and E. H. Burnside were masters of ceremonies, and Mrs. Mainland’s orchestra supplied a delightful programme of music. During the evening Mr. F. M. Waters, president. of the club, W'elcomed the many guests, who included representatives from a number or the surrounding clubs, and then called on the winners of the various club competitions to receive their trophies. The following were the successful competitors: Women’s Championship (Suttie Cup).—Miss D. Bryant. Smith Cup Handicap.—Miss C. Bryant. Women’s Doubles.—Misses N. Mellsop and K. Leonard. President’s Trophy, Handicap Singles.—Miss C. Bryant. Men’s Championship.—Mr. H. Elder. Mixed Doubles Championship.—H. Elder and Miss D. Bryant. Mixed Doubles Handicap.—F. Catt and Miss D. Bryant. Booth, frock of daffodil taffeta, ' banded with rainbow shades, and finished ' with posies and streamers at waistline, j Alexico’s first airplane elopement ended unfortunately, because the airplane, although faster than Lochinvar’s horse, could not beat the telegraph. Angelina Medina, whose parents disapproved of her love for Jose Pastrans, decided to fly with him from Tampico to Alexico- City and to be married there. The outraged parents arrived at the airdrome as the couple were leaving. Hurrying back to the j police court, they had a warrant for the daughter’s arrest telegraphed to f Alexico City. It was served when she i landed there, and she was taken back j to Tampico by rail.
