Parties Are Active In Suburban Areas

CANDIDATES FOR NEW SEAT Parties and candidates are becoming active in the new Auckland suburbs electorates. Sir James Gunson has been asked to stand in the Reform interest, and Mr. E. R. Allen is announced as the United Party nominee. The request to Sir James Gunson to offer himself for the Suburbs seat was made by a meeting of 25 representatives from the Auckland suburban districts, which was held at Henderson last evening, under the auspices of the Reform League. The request was worded as under: “This meeting of representatives from Avondale, Avondale South, Glen Eden, Swanson, Oratia, Henderson, To Atatu, and Henderson Valley, is strongly of opinion that every effort should be made to induce Sir James Gunson to accept nomination for the Auckland Suburbs seat.” Mr. E. R. Allen, who is the chosen nominee of the United Party, is 60 years of age, and came to New Zealand from England in 1879. He had a brilliant school career, winning both National and Rawlings scholarships, completing his education at the Auckland Grammar School. He then went farming, subsequently joining the staff of Messrs. Archibald Clark and Sons, remaining in their service for 15 years. Later he farmed with success in the Bay of Plenty and Waikato districts, etiring two years ago. He is a member of the Mount Roskill Road Board.

TO STAND FOR OROUA

MR. J. G. COBBE RUMOURED (Special to THE SUN) WANGANUI, Friday. A report has gained currency that Mr. J. G. Cobbe, chairman of directors of the Feilding Freezing Works, intends to contest the Oroua seat at the general elections. Mr. Cobbe has been urged for many years to contest the seat in the Liberal interests, but has refused each time. Mr. Cobbe’s son, Richard, twice tried but failed to capture the Reform seat. DUNEDIN NORTH SEAT MR. TAPLEY A CANDIDATE Press Association. DUNEDIN, Friday. It is announced that Mr. H. L. Tapley, Government member for Dunedin North, will again be a candidate for that seat. Mr. Tapley, who is at present in England, will be back in time for the opening of the session. AID FOR COUNTRY PARTY FARMERS’ UNION SUPPORT (From Our Own Correspondent) WAIUKU, Friday. The Waiuku branch of the Farmers’ Union at a meeting to-day confirmed a resolution passed last month that the union sholud support the Country Party. There was an attendance of about 25 members, and only one or two dissented from the resolution. The president of the branch, Mr. H. O. Mellsop, explained that in view of the importance of the question members had been notified of the passing of the resolution and given the opportunity to confirm or reject it. The resolution would act as an instruction to the branch’s delegates to the forthcoming conference of the Farmers’ Union at Hamilton.
