WHANGAREI ROADS
TAR-SEALING SCHEME APPROVED EXPENDITURE OF £60,000 (From Our Own Correspondent) WHANGAREI, Friday. The Whangarei County Council made another landmark in the progress of the district at a meeting to-day, when they approved of a scheme for the expenditure of £60,000 for bitumen penetration surfacing of the main arterial roads radiating from Whangarei. The apportionment of the expenditure of the £60,000, in three years, was suggested as follows: Kamo-Hikurangi Road, £l',lQs each to the county and the Uikurangi riding, and £8,835 to the Main Highways Board —total, £11,045; Whangarei-Oakleigh Road, county arid Maungakaramea riding, each £2,170, and board, '£17,348 —total, £21,688; Whangarei - Maungatapere Road, county and Maunu riding, each £1,666; and board, £13,335—t0ta1. £16,667; Whangarei-Onerahi Road, county and Manaia riding, each £1,059, and board, £B,4B2—total, £10,600.
The engineer, Mr. W. Norris, was instructed to draft, a proposal to be submitted to the Highways Board. The proposed basis of payment between the Highways Board and the council was 4—l, the latter dividing its share among the ridings, which contribute from 33 1-3 to 80 per cent., with an internal scheme: of financing and repayment over a period.up to six years. The scheme has been made imperative owing to the high cost of maintenance on such well-used roads. The highway funds available for this work come under the heading “for roads adjacent to boroughs over 6,000 population.;’
