TARANAKI TROTS
TO-MORROW’S CARD GOOD SPORT PROMISED PROSPECTS REVIEWED The Fourth totalisator meeting of the Taranaki Trotting Club will be held to-morrow on the New Plymouth racecourse when a good day’s sport is promised. The fields are of sufficient strength to ensure keen racing with interesting finishes. SINCE receiving the privilege of using the totalisator at its fixtures j the Taranaki Trotting Club lias made i gobd progress and it is quite on the ! cards that when another permit is available it will find its way to New ! Plymouth. Those who have been interested in | the development of the pastime in the ‘‘butter” province were enthusiastic and energetic, and worked willingly to bring the sport into prominence with the result their efforts have been successful. The stakes have been increased as the club progressed and this has led to a good class of trotter and pacer visiting the Taranaki fixture* and in this respect the fields for to-morrow’s card tft’e no exception to the rule. The first “tote” function was held in 1925 when Mr. B. P. Edwards, of Otahuhu, returned the initial dividend with Oleda. The first cup was won by the Canterbury pacer Wairua, who defeated Buz Buz and Gold Flake narrowly after a most exciting finish. The following year W. Willetts was successful with Kokiritea, and the Wellsford mare, Gold Dial, lifted the purserT* months ago. The day’s proceedings will commence with the NOVICE HANDICAP li miles. Lord Lu . . Lt. Lady Jewel . Lt. Araroa . . . Lt. Musical . . . Lt. j Louie Dillon . Lt. Don Wildman Lt. i Lady Ebony . Lt. Yds. bhd. Loyalty . . . Lt. Muriel Thorpe 43 The field is not a particularly strong one, and, with the exception of Muriel Thorpe, the contestants are all on the limit. Lord Lu showed pace at Hawera and should be improved by the racing. Musical is another that will probably do better. Lady Jewel and Louie Dillon will go well for the major portion of the distance, but Muriel Thorpe, who ran third the last day at Wanganui in a tick under 3.35, looks the goods on 3.43. MURIEL THORPE will be favourite and MUSICAL next choice. Square-gaiters will clash in the WAITARA HANDICAP Octochord . . Lt. Special Bell . . 60 Carberley . . Lt. Lochade ... 60 Timbell . . . Lt. Colonel Tliorpe 96 Yds. bhd. Rebecca . . . 10S Nelson’s Lady Ena . . 12u Request ... 12 Leo Mauritius 168 Mokanna ... 60 Real Todd . . 168 Carberley should be the pick of the front row, but Nelson’s Request may receive more attention on the day. Mokanna wjll probably appeal most of the next line, but Special Bell if kept down. would be a nuisance. Colonel Thorp© is overdue and Rebecca and Lady Ena are sure to be there when the post comes in sight. MOKANNA and LADY ENA may be the elect of backers. The next item of interest will be the URENUI HANDICAP 2 miles. Hostess . . . Lt. Kolmar . „ . . 36 Yds. bhd. Bell Dial ... 60 Dealer .... 12 Anseline . . . 24 Lady Zoo ... 24 Speed King . . 90 Great Delight . 24 Wrigley ... 96 Ce Advanceur 24 Off the front Hostess must have a good chance and Lady Zoe on Wanganui form is nicely placed. Ce Advanceur lias been threatening to break it ; for a win, and Great Delight is full j of promise. Bell Dial went two good i races at Hawera over this distance j and should account for those behind : her, as well as being a nuisance to those in front. BELL DIAL and HOSTESS may find most support. Chief interest will then be centred in the parade and preliminaries for the TARANAKI TROTTING CUP 2 miles. Dad’s Hope . Lt. Advance 36 Brigand . . . Lt. Dillon Hu on . 30 Kevinbrae . . Lt. Tui Wildwood 36 Beatty . . . Lt. Van Cap ... 48 Yds. bhd. Tamerlane . . 60 Joy Bird ... 32 Lady Joan . . 72 Direct Todd . 32 Gold Dial ... 72 Peter Grattan 12 Lord Nepean . 84 Toll Chimes . 24 Quality, as well as quantity, is represented here, and of the front lot, Kevin Brae, on the' strength of his performance at Wanganui, will find most favour. Peter Grattan showed a glimpse of his true form at Hawe.ra and is a big possibility, and Toll Chimes must not be overlooked. Lottie
Advance, Dillon Huon and Tui Wildwood are a solid trio and if the latter went away right it would be the end of the story. Gold Dial has plenty of speed and can stay, but still loses ground at the start. KEVIN BRAE, TUI WILDWOOD and PETER GRATTAN will appeal to backers. Speed is represented among those engaged in th© MOTUROA HANDICAP 1 mile. Little Huia . Lt. Great Ballin . 22 Louie Dillon . Lt. Trustworthy . 24 Lady Ebony . Lt. Lena Chimes . 24 Leo Mauritius Lt. Nellie Bramley G 6 Indicator . . Lt. Ohr Nancy _ . 48 Yds. bhd. Queen Gaza .... 12 Elizabeth . . 43 Louie Dillon and Indicator are quick beginners, and so is the trotter Leo Mauritius, but Gaza looks to have it on the front lot. If Great Ballin could hop out quickly he would have a good chance, but Trustworthy will probably hold him safe. Our Nancy and Queen Elizabeth are on handy marks, but TRUSTWORTHY and GAZA may claim most attention on the machine. Those who like the trotters will have another chance in the INGLEWOOD HANDICAP 2 miles. Tui Bells . . Lt. Rebecca . . . Lt. Colonel Yds. bhd. Thorpe w . Lt. Lady Ena . . 26 Nelson’s Call Boy ... 48 Request . . Lt. Real Todd . . 72 Lochade ... Lt. Bingen Starr . 120 Mokanna . . . Lt. Anseline . . . 16S Special Bell . Lt. Tui Bells will set a merry pace, but if Colonel Thorp© repeats his run of Wanganui he will keep them all busy and with Rebecca should do best of the limit lot. Lady Ena went a nice two miles when she won at Wanganui and looks nicely placed here. Call Boy has been racing more consis- j tently and will prove a hard proposi- j tion. Real Todd, having struck form, ! should go on with the game. Although well back Anseline will be j putting in solid strides when a lot i are stopping. However, REAL TODD and CALL BOY may be the most fancied.
This event over the way will be clear for the staging of the OMATA HANDICAP, 1J miles. Hilltop . . . Lt. Yds. olid. Richmond Horoto .... 12 Lass . . . Lt. Ce Advanceur 12 Kolmar .... Lt. Lady Zoe ... 12 Hostess . . . Lt. Bell Dial ... 36 Dealer .... Lt. Our Nancy . . 48 Mona Logan . Lt. Queen Great Ballin . Lt. Elizabeth • . 48 Hilltop, Richmond Lass and Great Ballin have good prospects off the front, and Mona Logan, a great beginner, only requires to hang on to give the others a headache. Lady Zoe ran a good second at Wanganui to Queen Elizabeth, but the latter and Our Nancy are on a handy mark and those in front will not need to lose any time. QUEEN ELIZABETH and OUR NANCY will appeal best to speculators. The curtain will be lowered on the entertainment with the dinning of the FAREWELL HANDICAP 1£ miles. Silver Link . . Lt. Admiral Loch . 24 Profiteer . . . Lt. Abrudbanya . 24 Wrigley .... Lt. Cora Tacks . 24 Beatty .... Lt. Dillon Huon . 24 Kevinbrae . . Lt. Our Patch . . 24 Sailor Boy . . Lt. IJramie .... 24 Maid of the Master Mountains . Lt. Councillor . 24 Yds. bhd. Lottie Advance 24 Tui Wildwood 12 Van Cap . . 26 Joy Bird ... 12 Direct Todd . . 26 Sailor Boy and Beatty are the most likely off the end, and the latter will take a powe.r of settling. Joy Bird only requires to go away right and the others will have a bird’s eye view of proceedings. Cora Jacks strolled in the mile at Hawera and may go the extra distance. Admiral Lock will be better suited here and Dillon Huon may do the best of the others, but Direct Todd is sure to threaten danger. DILLON HUON and ADMIRAL LOCK may be on deck when the machine closes.
Great Delight is s'cill suffering for his cheek in running second at Wanganui to Peter Pirate ar.d improving his handicap time. The Kea Dillon gelding put up another pleasing performance at Hawera, although <he failed to get a place, but he may be in the money at New Plymouth, where he is engaged in a two-mile heat.
