GARDEN PARTY
A Very successful garden party was held under the auspices of the Pukekohe Methodist Church in the primary school grounds on Saturday afternoon, over £26 being raised. The function was officially opened by Mr. E. D. McLennan, M.P. for Franklin; and among those present were the Rev. W. J. Elliott, president of the New Zealand Methodist Conference, and the Rev. R. R- Greenwood, the Papakura Presbyterian pastor. Holders of the various stalls, which were brightly decorated, were: Afternoon Tea: Mesdames*J. Patterson, W. Wilson, E. Smith, Turner, and Vant. Produce: Mesdames F. Sutcliffe and H. V. Wilkins. Cakes: Mesdames J. J. McKinney, M. Wright, T. Brownlee, and Dingle. Sweets: Mrs. Ellis and members of the girls’ senior Bible Class. Ice cream and drinks: Mrs. Rowe and junior Bible Class girls. Sewing: Mesdames J. Bellhouse and Horne. Novelty: Mrs. G. Hughson, Misses Ella and' Eva Brownlee.
FAREWELL PARTY THREE GUESTS OF HONOUR Mrs. Ewen Alison gave a delightful morning tea party on Saturday in the Tudor rooms in farewell to Dr. Margaret Knight, Mrs. Kingsford and Miss T. Donald, who are all leaving Auckland shortly to visit England. The table was charmingly decorated with gaily-hued flowers. Mrs. Alison wore an attractive ensemble of black satin faconne and a hat of rose lustre toning. Her guests included: Mrs. W. R. Wilson, Mrs. R. M. Tolhurst, Mrs. Arnold Ely, Mrs. C. Keeble, Mrs. Fenton, Miss W. Averill, Miss Beckett (Marton), Miss E. Alison, Miss J. McCormick, Miss Gifford, Miss M. Hay, Miss C. Russell. Miss C. Anderson, Miss M. Somerville, and Miss M. Dryden. 80TH BIRTHDAY PARTY FUNCTION AT RUSSELL Mrs. Marshall, one of the oldest residents of Russell, was the guest of honour at a most enjoyable function held on Saturday at the Kororareka Croquet Club’s greens in honour of her 80th I birthday. The pavilion was attractively decorated with flowers and flags, and at the guest of honour’s table was a great, birthday cake with 80 candles. Mrs. Marshall was presented by Mr. ! Clow with a reading lamp and a hand- | bag as tokens of esteem and regard I from the combined croquet and bovli ins clubs and her many friends. Congratulatory speeches were made i by Mrs. Clow on behalf of the croquet i club, Mr. Clow for the bowlers, and | Mr. Hewin for the people of Russell. J After a sojourn of five years in the ; Indian Empire, Miss Rita Mi Gilbert, j daughter of Mr. H. E. Gilbert, of Well- | ington, returned to Xew* Zealand by the j Maunganui on Tuesday. Miss Gilbert ' was for some years on the staffs of the j the "Wellington and Wanganui Hospital ! Boards, and resigned from the latter ! to join the “Lady Minto Indian Nurs- ! ing Association.” which has branches throughout India. During her term in India Miss- Gilbert was stationed in various parts of the Punjab district, and from there went to Burma, her ; central headquarters being in Ran- | goon.
