SCHOOL SWIMMING SPORTS There is at Ngatea a very active swimming club and, as a result of its activities, Ngatea probably has a greater proportion of children swimmers than has any other centre in the county. _ The value of this branch of the clfib’s activities was demonstrated to a large gathering of parents on Saturday, when swimming’ sports for children of the seliools of the county were held. The Pekapeka Road section of the Paeroa-Pokeno main highway between Kerepeehi and Netherton, which was temporarily closed during the construction of the Waihou River stopbank near the corner of the Turua-Netherton Road, was reopened last week on the completion of the claying of the crossing over the bank. The crossing is not metalled and may be slippery in wet weather. The connecting up of the stopbank near the Komata North ferry was completed last week-end with the exception of the small gap where the temporary road crosses. This deviation will be in use for some weeks as the claying of the new road on top of the stopbank will not be commenced for about a month, the big steam excavator which will do the work having still about half a mile of bank to cover before it reaches the site. Til© electrically-driven suction dredge which pumped the sand for the stopbank is to be shifted downstream below the steam dredge, which is working at the bank on the other side of the river. The removal of the dredge, and its long pipe-line, will enable the Komata North ferry to be reopened, but as the pontoon is being overhauled this may be delayed till about the middle of the week.
