KING COUNTRY NEWS

An impressive service took place in the Taumarunui Presbyterian Church when Mr. C. Brierly, late of Taradale, Hawke’s Bay, was ordained as a minister of the Presbyterian Church and inducted to the pastorship of the local charge. The officiating ministers from the Waikato Presbytery were: The Revs. W. Butterwortli (Te Awamntu), J. Hay (Cambridge) and H. G. Gilbert (Hamilton). Other clergymen who assisted were the Revs. J. McCaw and J. E. Ward, of Taumarunui. There was a large congregation present, Mr. W. Thompson, choirmaster, being at the organ. The ordination was carried out by all the ministers present. Mr. Hay preached an inspiring sermon, Mr. Butterwortli addressed the new minister, and Mr. Gilbert spoke on Mr. Brierly’s behalf to the congregation. Mr. and Mrs. Brierly with their youngest son, came to Taumarunui overland by car, making the 200-mile journey from Taradale in three sections. Taumarunui vital statistics for the month of March were 24 births, 10 deaths and 3 marriages. For the quarter ended March 31 the figures were: Births 44, deaths 17, marriages 13. ■* * * The meteorological figures for the same month, as supplied by the postmaster, Mr. N. R. Mclssac, are as follows: Total fall for month, 2in. Rain fell on eight days, with the maximum fall of .63in. on March 5. In March, 1927, the rainfall shows the extraordinary comparison of 7.73 in. on 13 days. * * * The first month’s results in Taumarunui’s ‘‘Buy at Home” competition series are announced as follows: First prize, £3, Mrs. A. Krebs: second prize, £2 10s, Mrs. S. Sarah: third prize, £1 10s, Mr. R. White (Otunui). * * * The ladies of the Taumarunui Tennis Association proved their mettle against the Ohura representatives at Taumarunui, as they won every game they played. The men players also secured the laurels from Ohura, the tournament going to Taumarunui with a score of nine matches to two. The play generally was very keen and much more warmly contested than the scores indicate. _____________________
