CAMBRIDGE EIGHT WINS

VARSITY BOAT RACE VICTORY BY TEN LENGTHS By Cable. —Press Association. — Copyright. LONDON, Saturday. The 80th annual boat race between Oxford and Cambridge Universities, from Putney to Mortlake, was to-day won by Cambridge by 10 lengths. Oxford won the toss and took the Middlesex side. Cambridge got off the more smartly and was a canvas ahead in less than a minute. The Oxford boat was already rolling, but quickly recovered and almost drew level with Cambridge just ahead of the mile post. The Cambridge crew rowed with beautiful rhythm and length, whereas the Oxford crew were sloppy and ragged. Cambridge shot beneath Hammersmith Bridge a length ahead, and after that did as they liked. It was virtually an exhibition row. The Australian Morphett was one of the steadiest and most effective rowers in the hopeless chase. Oxford were slightly better down the Chiswick straight, but after that struck a bat patch and splashed and rolled in the most tame fast ion. The time was 20m 21s. Listeners throughout the country head an excellent broadcast from a launch which followed the umpire’s boat. —A. and N.Z.-Sun.

Cambridge has now won the annua* boat race five years in succession and 39 times in all. Oxford has won on 40
