“Harding Knew”
FALL AND OIL LEASES PRESIDENT APPROVED By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. Reed. 9.58 a.m. EL PASO, Wed. A. B. Fall, a former Secretary of the Interior, who has been Involved in the naval oil scandals, gave an interview in which he declared that the Teapot, borne lease was the “most financially advantageous deal ever made for the Government.” He reiterated his denials regarding alleged bribes and the suppression of news about the leases. The principal feature of the interview was Fall’s production of a copy of a message allegedly from President Harding, reading: "I think it only fair to say in this connection that the policy adopted by the Secretary of the Navy, Mr. Denby, and the Secretary of the Interior, Mr. Fall, dealing with the matter, was submitted to me prior to its adoption, and the policy decided upon and the subsequent acts have at all times had my approval.” It is expected that Mr. Fall, in his anticipated testimony before the Senate, will maintain that President Harding had a complete knowledge of the situation.—A. and N.Z.
