STOCK ON HIGHWAYS
NEED FOR NEW ROUTE DAMAGE AND INCONVENIENCE CATTLE ON GREAT SOUTH ROAD As times goes on the need for a stock route for the transference of cull cattle from the Waikato to Westfield becomes more acute. Recently strong representations were made to visiting Ministers of the Crown. Several deputations asked that the stock traffic be removed from the main highway and that a commission be set up to investigate the position thoroughly. At present an average of 1,000 head of cattle a week passes along the Great South Road, and in addition to the inconvenience and annoyance caused to travellers there is a certain amount of damage done to the stock itself. On various parts of the road the present route passes through the business areas of the townships, and the damage done to footpaths and
shoulders of the concrete durthe course of a year is enormous. One of the principal sufferers is -Hanurewa, where there is no alternate route. Negotiations were recently started by the town board of that district in conjunction with surroundjjg local bodies for a stock route, bough Papakura and Papatoetoe have n °t yet interested themselves in the Jitter. Papakura has a deviation to relieve the business area, and Papais not affected so long as the bjanukau County Council raises no Objection to the the cattle using its roads.
