BATHS STAY CLOSED
Water Not Fit to Bathe In CHLORINATION AND FILTRATION NEEDED PARNELL BATHS are to remain closed and the City Council is to be recommended to install both chlorination and filtration plants at both Parnell and Shelly Beach Baths.
IN addition the council will be recommended to add a chlorination plant to the equipment at the Hobson Street tepid baths. These decisions were announced by the Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, this morning. He said that further tests of the water in the vicinity of the baths had disclosed a condition which, in the opinion of the committee dealing with the inquiry, renders it unfit for swimming. The idea of the combined chlorination and filtration plants is to both clear and sterilise the water. The Mayor declined to answer when asked if the bacteriological tests
showed that the discharge of sewage into the harbour was the cause of the impurities. One of those present, however, commented: MWhat else could it be?" from which, together with other circumstances, is gathered the impression that the public baths have joined the public beaches under the category of ‘"septic owing to sewage.”
