CAR RUNS OVER BANK
INVALID’S BACK BROKEN HAT CAUSES TRAGEDY Press Association. * PALMERSTON N., To-day. An inquest was held this morning regarding the death of Alfred Carl Butzbach, aged 46 years, who was killed in a motor accident on Saturday. Evidence was given to show that, when on a steep hill near Aokautere, deceased’s hat blew off and the car was stopped to regain it. It was then found that the engine would not start and Butzbach, an invalid, was removed from the front seat, in order to secure the tools. When adjustments had been made, he was put back into the car and while the driver was walking round the front of the vehicle to the driving side, the car moved backwards, and at once went over a steep bank, falling 25 feet. Deceased’s back was broken. When the driver left the car the gears were in neutral and the brakes on. When it was examined later the hand-brake was not on and the gears were engaged. It is presumed that deceased, in adjusting his rug, dislodged the brakes. A verdict was returned, according to the medical evidence.
