IDOLS OF THE GIRLS
VARSITY ROWING CREWS. PROMINENT SPORTSMEN SCOFF By Cable. —Press Association. — Copyright. LONDON, Monday. The members of the crews of the Oxford and Cambridge boats who are now in training for the annual boat race, and who are the idols of the girls, are at present the objects of severe criticism. Their methods are variously described as old-fashioned and inadequate. The fact that three lesser crews who went direct from their office desks to compete in a river race on Saturday lowered the Oxford crew’s trial time over the same course has caused prominent sportsmen to scoff. They say the training of the University crews should be drastically curtailed and that two months would be enough instead of them being locked up and pampered until they become bored with one another. The general feeling seems to be that there is too much hero-worship and too little common-sense in the methods now adopted.—A. and N.Z.
