UNIVERSITY BOXING
AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS MANY WILLING BOUTS What the boxers at the* Auckland University championships, held in the College Hall last evening, lacked in science they made up for in willingness. The majority of the boxers were lacking in the finer points of pugilism, but everyone showed a willingness and gameness that was very pleasing after witnessing some of the amateur contests- at the Town Hall. Two heavy-weights, Frear and Peacock, put up the best display of the evening. They fought like a pair of light-weights and showed a speed not often seen among the heavy men. It is to be hoped that they will be seen at one of the Northern Boxing Association’s carnivals in the Town Hail. Rickard, the well-known amateur boxer, was successful in carrying off both the bantam and feather-weight titles. He had no difficulty in beating his opponents. Mr. Ernest Craig, president of the Northern Boxing Association, was the referee. Following are the results: BANTAM-WEIGHT Final.—V. C. Rickard, Sst 61b, defeated A. Iv. North, Sst 61b, in a very one-sided contest. Rickard won all the way. FEATHER-WEIGHT C. Iv. Stubbs, 9st 21b, defeated A. P. Postlewaite, 9st 21b, after a tame fight. V. C. Rickard won by default from G. Blomfield. Final.—V. C. Rickard, Sst 61b, defeated C. Iv. Stubbs, .Ost 21b. Rickard was too experienced for his opponent and carried the honours in all three rounds. LIGHT-WEIGHT T. Hall, lOst, defated H. O. Houshen, Ost 131 b, in a willing contest. The former severely punished his opponent but lloushen fought back gamely. He could not, however, make up the leeway. A. R. Mayhill, lOst, defeated S. Sims, Ost 111 b. Nothing of a startling nature occurred in the first round but Mayhill won the second and third with ease. T. Hall, lOst, defeated G. L. King, Ost 121 b. Heavy hitting characterised this bout, but Hall's reach gave him victory. King made a very good showing against his tall opponent. Final.—Mayhill won by default from Hall. WELTER-WEIGHT Final.—A. R. Mayhill, lOst, defeated H. Jenkin, lOst Sib. In the final round both mixed well. Jenkin was down for a count of five. Moorhouse, list 41b, defeated E. P. Wills, list. Moorhouse was a winner all the way. . He tore into his opponent, who, except for an occasional left, was content to cover up. The referee stopped the fight in the last round. Final. —B. Moorhouse, list 41b, defeated D. Hyauiason, list 31b. Moorhouse was out for blood from the first gong. After a number of heavy blows had been exchanged Moorhouse sent over a heavy right swing that dropped Hyauiason and dislocated his shoulder. The referee awarded the fight to Moorhouse.
