FINE JAVELIN THROW

ALMOST A RECORD LAY’S GREAT PERFORMANCE Press Association. HAWERA, Wednesday. A javelin throw of 216 ft. 3Jin. was registered by the selected Olympic representative, S. A. Lay, in an exhibition at a gymkhana conducted by Egmont Agricultural and Pastoral Association this afternoon. Lay’s previous best for New Zealand and Australia was 209 ft. 4in., at New Plymouth, on February 4. To-day’s effort is only 2ft. sin. short of the world’s record of 218 ft, As he had the advantage of a light cross breeze a new record for Australia and New Zealand is not being applied for.
