road board meets The removal of the Seddon Monument from its present position on the intersection of six roads at the Royal Oak was urged by Mr. J. R. Robertson at the meeting of the Mount Koskill Road Board last evening. The structure was a death trap. The monument should be transferred to a less dangerous site before it caused loss of life. Narrow escapes were happening dally because of the monument obscuring the view of both motorists and pedesMr. Robertson also urged that the sharp north-west corner at the Royal Oak should be rounded off and made safe for traffic before it was permanently built on. The board adopted both suggestions, and the clerk was instructed to open negotiations with the Onehunga Borough Council for the removal of the monument, and with the owner of the land on the north-west corner referred to. The Auckland branch of the National Council of Women wrote protesting against the further destruction of natural beauty in the shape of volcanic cones around Auckland. The board decided to acquaint the writers of its sympathy tvith their objects. A letter was received from the Mount Albert and Roskill West Ratepayers’ Association asking that in view of the establishment of a fire board in the district, that the road board approach the Fire Underwriters’ Association with a viey to obtaining reductions in insurance premiums. Mr. Tozer said that the losses by fire were excessive, and that the water pressure in the district was not sufficient to warrant any reductions in premiums, but nevertheless it was decided to accede to the request of the ratepayers.
