NOISY MOTOR-CYCLISTS
DISCUSSED AT TE KUITI Noisy motor-cyclists, who are said to be causing a nuisance in Te Kuiti, were discussed at the meeting of the Borough Council on Monday. Cr. T. O’Connell said that the Te Kuiti Road was being used as a speedway by several local motor-cyclists, who rode at speeds up to 50 miles an hour. The main street was not exempt from this pernicious practice, as well as the open
throttle nuisance, which latter greatly disturbed church services on Sunday. It was decided that the traffic inspector be instructed to take steps to abate the nuisance. The Mayor. Mr. W. F. Broadfoot. urged that steps be taken to obtain a revaluation of the whole borough in view of the position which had arisen as a result of alterations in the borough boundaries. Revaluations of portions which had been included in the Waitomo County were now much lower, the consequent loss of revenue having to be made up by the remaining ratepayers. Cr. O’Connell gave notice of motion that the council apply for a revaluation of the borough. As a result of the recent decision of the Main Highways Board, the main road through Te Kuiti from the southern to the northern boundary has been vested in the board and is now eligible for the £1 10s for £1 for maintenance. A subsidy of £1 for £1 will be forthcoming for constructional work. The Mayor stated that unpaid rates in the borough were assuming alarming proportions, and the Finance Committee was being inundated with requests that the council should not press for payment in cases of financial embarrassment. The position would not be improved if these requests were granted. No action was taken.
