TAKANINI CARNIVAL

SPORTS QUEEN ELECTED The election of the Takanini Tennis Club’s queen was held in the parish hall on Saturday evening, when there were present many residents, and a good number of visitors from the surrounding districts. The evening was spent in dancing to music supplied by Mrs. Coilings and Mr. Ballard. Mr. Kennerley ably fulfilled the duties of M.C. A number of competitions were held. The following were the prizewinners: Miss Woodcocks, Messrs Rae, Priest (2), J. McCarten, Harris, V. Ashby, A. Wallace. Toward the close of the evening Mr. Sandford announced the results of the carnival, which were: Sports queen, Miss Kathleen Shepherd, 8,252 votes, first; and children’s queen, Hilda Gordon, 7,174 votes, second. The proceeds of the various functions amounted to £192 16s 6d, and this will be utilised for putting down tennis courts for the Takanini Club. Mr. Kennerley thanked those who had worked for Miss Shepherd’s success, and on behalf of the queen responded to the shower of congratulations. Mr. E. D. McLennan, M.P., congratulated the club on the success of the carnival, and also extended the thanks of the residents to Mr. Sinclair, who had donated the grounds to the club. Mr. Sinclair briefly responded. The crowning ceremony will be held in the Takanini hall on Saturday, March 31.
