A THEATRE WITH A PULL
PRINCE EDWARD STAGES TUG-OF-WAR On Saturday evening the first heat of the Prince Edward tug-of-war contest, for which eight teams have entered, was decided. Tlie Rev. Charles Chandler, assistant City Missioner, acted as referee. Above the" rope a huge dial and pointer conveyed to the audience the trend of the battles, and, as all the pulls were keenly contested, tlie excitement was intense. There were five men in a team, and at the side of each stood the captain, who, watching keenly, controlled the efforts of his men with almost imperceptible signals. Southdown PYeezing Works gained two inches in the first minute of tlieir contest with the Pioneers. This advantage they held throughout the full four minutes. In the second pull the same tactics were Southdown winning again. The contest between Northern Roller Mills and Webb’s Ponies was particularly close, resulting in two wans for the' former team. The second pull was a draw. Next Saturday the second heat will be held.
