“POLITICAL PULL”
PLEA FOR HIGHWAY A strong protest was made by Cr. J. W. Anderson (chairman) at the monthly meeting of the Matamata County Council following the reading of a letter from the Matamata Town Board which asked that the Mata-mata-Gordon-Te Aroha road be put forward as a main highway. The letter stated that an allocation of 25 per cent, of the petrol tax had been made to cover the cost of the creation of 3,000 miles of additional main highways, and it was hoped to secure the road mentioned being included in this mileage. The local members of Parliament were being written to and the council’s support was also asked for. The chairman, Mr. J. W. Anderson, desired strongly to oppose the suggestions contained in the letter. If wirepulling is allowed it opens the doors to all kinds of trickery. These questions should be dealt with solely by recommendations from the district councils to the Main Highways Board, and not through political “pull.” Other members cordially endorsed this view, and on the motion of Crs. Allen and Rollett the request was declined.
