REJECTION OF TREATY WAFD LEADER MAY FORM MINISTRY By Cable. —Press Association. — Copyright. | Reed. 9.5 a.m. CAIRO, Sunday. ! The Prime Minister of Egypt, Sar- | wat Pasha, has resigned, ostensibly for health reasons The "Morning Post's” Cairo correspondent says that the King is expected to invite Nahas, the leader of the Wafd Party, which commands a majority in Parliament, to form a Ministry. A gratifying feature is the quiet orderliness of the city. Formerly 'Anglo-Egyptian crises were accompanied by disorders and occasional acts of violence. This time there were only a few schoolboys’ ebullitions, which the Wafd itself suppressed. According to a message from Cairo the newspaper “A 1 Ahram” says that the Government has not only rejected the British treaty proposals, but Sarwat Pasha’s project agreeing to the British Army’s occupation' for a further ten years, after which failing an agreement the question would be referable to the League of Nations. The Wafd asserts the Egyptians will not recognise the British right of occupation of Egypt. Interviewed at Paris on his way to Geneva, the Foreign Secretary said that he considered Egypt’s rejection of the treaty was a misfortune, but Egypt’s, not Britain’s, misfortune. The extremist influence had prevailed. It was an honest and generous attempt to reconcile Egyptian aspirations to the vital needs of the British Empire.—A. and N.Z.
