GREYMOUTH JUBILEE
TOWN EN FETE CELEBRATIONS COMMENCE Press Association. GREIMOUTH, Sunday. The Prime Minister arrived at Greymouth yesterday to attend the Grey district jubilee. To-day he addressed a gathering of pioneers at the Old People’s Home, on the occasion of their jubilee dinner. Special jubilee services were held in all the churches to-day. There were large congregations at the Anglican Church, where Archdeacon York, of Blenheim, a former vicar of Mawhera, preached and dealt with the many phases of the West Coast in early history. At St. Patrick’s Church Bishop Brodie, of Christchurch, celebrated Pontifical High Mass and paid a high tribute to the West Coast pioneers. At the Presbyterian Church the Rev. T. N. Cuttle spoke on the significance of the jubilee, and at the Methodist Church the Rev. G. Brown gave a jubilee sermon. The main streets of the town are brilliantly festooned with bunting and coloured electric lights. Large numbers of visitors from all parts of New Zealand, and some from Australia, are joining in the festivities. A new cooperative colliery under the State Mines Department, which will be opened on Tuesday, is named the Jubilee Colliery. H.M.S. Veronica is visiting here for the jubilee and the ship’s company to-day attended the Anglican Church service, at which the Prime Minister also was present. The main celebrations wall commence on Tuesday.
