YOUNG MAN’S CRIMINAL RECORD GAOLED FOR FIVE YEARS “You have apparently made up your mind to wage war on society, and my duty is to protect the public. You will be sentenced to five years’ imprisonment with hard labour.* This was the edict of Mr. Justice Reed in the Supreme Court this morning when James Raymond Slattery, aged 21 years, appeared for sentence, on 13 charges of theft from dwellings and three of theft. “I find it difficult to say anything in the prisoner’s favour,” said Mr. Allan Moody. “He is only 21 years of age. and realising that gaol is the only thing. I would ask that he be kept in Auckland so that bis mother may see him.” His Honour qnoted the list of convictions to the name of the prisoner. They commenced in 1923. “It is quite useless imposing a term of reformative treatment,” said his Honour, “and on top of the sentence you will be declared an habitual criminal.”
