DISCOVERED IN TIME

FIRE IN PAPATOETOE HALL A small outbreak of fire was discovered in a storeroom underneath the operating box in the Papatoetoe Town Hall at 3 p.m. on Saturday. The fire originated among empty wooden spools and destroyed a quantity of paper stored in the room. The old town board records were not touched by the flames. The fire was discovered by Mr. A. Bullen, the operator, who was engaged in printing slides, and with the help of Mr. H. Coles, he managed to quell the outbreak before serious damage was done. The woodwork was scorched and there was a likelihood of the fire spreading to the wooden rafters. The origin of the fire is unknown. The hall had not been used since Thursday evening. The fire-fighting appliances were out of order and water had to be carried from the kitchen of the hall.
