SOLDIER SETTLERS
HARDSHIPS AT ORONGO In the course of an appeal made by Mr. A. M. Samuel, M.P., at Te Aroha, on Wednesday to the Minister of Lands, the Hon. A. D. McLeod, Mr. Samuel described the hardships under which the soldier settlers on the fescueridden lands of Orongo had been labouring for years. He instanced a case of a man who owned 16 good cows, and yet could only send 181 b of cream a day to the factory. Mr. Samuel asked that the settlers might be removed to a more profitable farming district, where they would have a chance of making a good living. The Minister admitted that the appeal was justified, but said that he could not move them to selected claims over the heads of thousands of others. He advised them to apply for Crown sections, available for selection, to secure which every facility would be given them.
