WOMAN TOURIST SEES QUEER SIGHT
DISAPPEARING ISLAND TOFUA TRAVELLERS Although she has travelled from tfce top of the American Continent for Mrs. C. J. Lozier Has known Alaska in her winter mantle of snow—and as far south as Mexico, she had to come to the Pacific to see something unique. HPHE American visitor, with her husband, arrived in Auckland yesterday by the Tofua. The Island mail boat made a detour on this occasion which permitted the party of touring Americans to see Falcon Island, whose erratic behaviour within the last few years has caused the keenest interest throughout the world.
The Tofua cruised in the vicinity of the island, which periodically disappears, for about two hours. The passengers had an excellent view. A large quantity of steam was issuing from the volcano. The highest point appeared to be about 500 ft above sea level.
“We have travelled a great deal, but we have not seen anything quite as queer as that island,” says Mrs. Lozier, who hails from Leonia, New Jersey.
