THE “WRONG HORSE”

GRIFFIS GETS TWO YEARS JUDGE’S MISPLACED ■ CONFIDENCE In giving Boe Griffis, alias Ray, alias Reid, a chance last week, when he appeared for sentence on a charge of attempted theft from a person, Mr. Justice Blair expressed the hope that he was not backing a wrong horse. His confidence was misplaced, and the “wrong horse” came before him in the Supreme Court this morning to receive sentence on the original charge on which he was admitted to probation.

“I only got put on Saturday, and was told to wait until Monday, and a man gave me two quid, and I was arrested and got six months down there; so now I don’t know how I am going to get on,” said Griffis when asked what he had to say. “You came before me, and I told you I was stretching the position to give you a chance,” said Mr. Justice Blair, “and you showed how much you appreciated ttoit by resorting to a similar type ox offence by robbing a man who befriended you. “You have been masquerading under a name that is not your own, and, having shown me how little you deserved the leniency extended, I will make the sentence commensurate with the offence. You will be detained for reformative detention . for two years, the term to commence after the expiry of your present sentence.”
