Raising Barrier Against N.Z. Pork
COMPETITION IN SYDNEY GROWERS SEEK HIGHER DUTY By Cable. —Press Association. — Copyright. Reed. 9.5 a.m. SYDNEY, To-day. The Minister of Trade and Customs, Mr. H. E. Pratten, has undertaken to bring the application made by the Primary Producers’ Union for increased deties on pork, bacon and hams before Cabinet at an early date. The objective is mainly to shut out importations from New Zealand. The application points out that it is considered that a duty equivalent to that on butter and cheese, namely, 6d to 7d a pound is the minimum required to put the pig industry on a more stable foundation. The extent to which New Zealand is competing on the Sydney market may be gauged from the fact that last month 281,612 pounds weight of green pork and bacon, ready for smoking, was imported from the Dominion into New South Wales. Imports for 1927 from the Dominion were over 530,204 pounds of pork and 341,099 pounds of bacon. —A. and N.Z.
