FIRE-FIGHTING
POSITION AT ONE TREE HILL CITY’S ASSISTANCE WANTED The inadequacy of the alarm system and other equipment of the volunteer fire brigade at One Tree Hill caused the road board at its meeting last evening to write to the Underwriters’ Association with a view to obtaining the services of the City Fire Brigade. A deputation from ratepayers in the Penrose district was also received. The chairman, Mr. R. G. Clark, said a metropolitan fire board was the only solution. By forming themselves into a fire board they would be shelving the question. Seventy-five per cent, of the expense now being undertaken by various bodies for that purpose would be wasted when a metropolitan board was formed. A complaint was received from a ratepayer that there was no public telephone within a convenient distance of Rockfield Road. It was decided that whereas the board was inclined to spend money on unnecessary measures, the Penrose district should be provided with a handreel until the negotiations with the underwriters had been completed.
