The candidates totalled 53,915, but those accepted only numbered 5,655. The number awaiting a decision was 394. The rejections were due to physical, medical, or educational unfitness. The Secretary of State for Air, Sir Samuel Hoare, said the candidates for the Air Force last year totalled 8,356, of whom only 2,453 were accepted.
