BOXING FLOURISHING IN HUNTLY DISTRICT

CONTESTS AT ROTOWARO (From Our Own Correspondent) HUNTLY, Monday. That boxing is not on the wane in and around Huntly was clearly demonstrated in the course of a chat with The Sun representative on Saturday last by Mr. Reece Lewis, instructor of the Rotowarb Boxing Cub. On Friday night the members of the Xgaruawahia Club, under the tutelage of Alf Bromwich, paid a visit to the mining town and were right royally received by the Waroites. Several interesting exhibition bouts were staged as follows (Ngaruawahia names first) : Mick Mcßurnie v. Ben Barlow (Rotowaro), Charley Saunders v. Sid Bennett (Rotowaro), Doug. Mitchell v. Claude Clifford (Rotowaro), Ron. Griffiths v. Bob Troughear (Glen Afton), Caleb Tapp (Rotowaro) v. Jack Manderson (Glen Afton). Ken Tapp (Rotowaro) v. Bert Smith (Rotowaro), J. Williams (Glen Afton) v. Cyril Crooks (Rotowaro), Evan Davies (Huntly) v. Jim Lamb (Huntly). Bennett and Saunders provided the “tit bit” of the evening and both lads put plenty of ginger into their work, it was a most successful evening and the Waroites will return the visit by going up to the riverside town next Saturday. Friday, March 9, is scheduled for the big tournament at Huntly in the Town Hall to help along Huntly’s big effort for their recreation ground. The chairman of the Town Board and his councillors are making a special effort to eclipse the former successful tournament held in Huntly and Frankton, Glen Afton, Rotowaro, and Huntly Clubs are combining. The Auckland Association is being approached to find a suitable amateur up to Bst 61b for Evan Davies, and a heavy about 13st. The veteran, Jim Mitchell, of Glen Afton, has a number of promising lads getting into shape, Reece Lewis and Leo Munro looking after Rotowaro’s boys, and with Bromich keen as ever with a good squad, and the evergreen enthusiast at Frankton (J. Williams) eager to assist, Huntly should record a full house next month. It is a good cause and be it charity or sport, the mining town has the reputation of drawing the fans in the athletic fixtures. A large number of supporters and competitors hereabouts are desirous of obtaining Mr. Frank Burns’s services, if he is available, as referee for the forthcoming tournament, and his acceptance of the position- would be most acceptable as well as experience for the boxers who up to now have not fought under that gentleman.
