ONEHUNGA BOROUGH

MEETING OF COUNCIL The usual fortnightly meeting of the Onehunga Borough Council was held last evening. According to advice received from the S.P.C.A., the council decided to procure a Greener humane killer for the destruction of unwanted dogs. Permission was granted to the Mothers’ League to hold a reunion in Jellieoe Park on February 23. The Mayor and councillors of Mount Eden are to be notified that the Onehunga Borough Council does not wish to give evidence before the proposed Transport Commission, but is strongly in favour of an elective transport board. Council employees who are 'members of the Onehunga Fire Brigade will not in future be paid for time lost while attending fires. The Te Papapa Tennis Club forwarded a deposit of £IOO toward the cost of excavating and preparing four courts on the council's reserve at Te Papapa and the council agreed to carry out the work on the old terms submitted. The Waterworks Committee reported that during the month of January 31,714,250 gallons of water had been pumped from the Onehunga Springs. Cr. R. G. Speight drew attention to the advantages which would acrue to the borough, by the issuing of its own heavy traffic and drivers’ licences instead of paying the Auckland City Council to do the work. He quoted the Boroughs of Mount Eden and Newmarket as instances where it was a paying proposition. The question w r as referred to the finance committee to report. The Church of England authorities are to be requested to put in order a stone wall on their church property at the corner of Queen and Church Streets. The following accounts are all in credit: District Fund, £1,047; Watermains Loan, £399; Drainage Advances Loan, £338; Destructor Loan, £1,370; Unemployment Loan, £5.
