THREE MEN GO TO GAOL
GUILTY OF THEFT UNFORTUNATE CELEBRATION Three old offenders. Harry Collins, Patrick Kelly and William Martin, came before Mr. Justice Reed in the Supreme Court this morning for sentence on charges of theft, while Collins had also a charge of receiving to ansj<*or the prisoners, Mr. F. D. McLiver pointed out that the men were all under the influence of liquor on the night of the alleged theft. They met some more men who w r ere also drunk, and these men'told them to go into a warehouse where they would get plenty of drink. It was while in there, and while they were making a row, that they were caught. Martin had only come out of gaol that night and the three men were celebrating the occasion. Counsel admitted that they had previous convictions, but asked for lenient treatment in the circumstances. “Looking at their records it would almost appear advisable to lock them up for a long time to get the liquor out of their systems, and give them a desire for work,” said his Honour. “Each man will be detained for reformative purposes for a period of 18 months. As for Collins, he will be sentenced to 12 months reformative detention on the charge of receiving, to be concurrent with the first sentence.” -
