PRIMATE’S TROWEL
PRESENT FROM OTAHUHU WOOD TAKEN FROM VICTORY CHURCH FOUNDATION STONE Another step in the general forward movement of the fastgrowing suburb of Otahuhu, will be recorded on Sunday, February 49, when Archbishop Averill, Primate of New Zealand, will lay the foundation-stone of the new Anglican church, which is at present being erected in Avenue Road West. rpHERE will be a number of the parochial clergy present, and the singing will be conducted by the combined choirs of St. Paul's, All Saints’ and St. Barnabas’s Churches. A procession of the clergy will march from the Masonic Hall. Croat South Road, to the scene of the ceremony, where speeches will be delivered from a. platform by his Grace the Archbishop; Mr. R. B. Todd, Mayor of Otahuhu; Canon H. Mason and Mr. J. J. Murphy. Special hymns will be rendered by the choirs, and a collection will be tahen. RELIC OF “VICTORY” The contractor, Mr. Thos. Clements, of Otahuhu, will present to the Primate a silver trowel, with which to perform the cegemony. The handle of the trowel will be made of wood from Lord Nelson’s famous battleship the “Victory.” At the conclusion of the ceremony, the ladies of the parish will dispense afternoon tea in the Parish Hall. This is the third church to be erected in the Otahuhu parish. The first was in 1851, and was destroyed by fire a few years later, and this was followed by the Selwyn Church, which was moved to Mangere Bast during the latter part’of last year.
