OLD FORT DESTROYED
EAST TAMAKI HOUSE BLAZE YESTERDAY A ten-roomed two-storeyed house in East Tamaki, which was used as a fort during the Maori wars, was destroyed by fire yesterday afternoon. There was little water to fight the flames, but the outbuildings were saved through the efforts of neighbours. The house was leased by Mr. J. Hamilton, who is sharemilking for the owner, Mr. R. Harris, of Papatoetoe. The whole family left the house early yesterday morning to spend the day in Auckland. Mr. Hamilton was working on the farm and did not know of the fire until afterwards. Nothing was saved from the building. The walls on the ground floor were built of scoria rock and were very thick. The top floor of five rooms was comparatively new.
The house insured for £BOO in the New Zealand Insurance Company’s office.
