“KIA ORA”— AUCKLAND’S FAREWELL
NOVEL SUGGESTION CAMPBELLS POINT DEFACEMENT “K-I-A O-R-A,” bbldly outlined on Campbell’s Point in creeping plants, would, in the opinion of the New Zealand Tourist League, be an unforgettable memory of Auckland in the minds of departing visitors. TT would speed the parting guest upon his way, and at the same time, be a welcome to the visitor to Auckland, according to the league’s officials. This view was placed before the City Council some time ago, and the Parks Committee was asked to report on the suggestion. The reply was that no action be taken. So matters stand very much as they were. The council intends evidently to hide the scar. Campbell’s Point, as citizens well know, is now practically defaced as a result of the Railway Department’s programme. If it remains in its present state it will undoubtedly constitute another ugly scar on Auckland’s waterfront. The league’s suggestion is that it Should either be planted in flowers forming a gigantic Kia Ora. or else these letters should be picked out In scoria. This typically Nev? Zealand greeting would, it is submitted, be a lasting memory of Auckland, especially in the minds of tourists.
