CURIOUS CONTRADICTION
HEENEY’S rapid rise to chainpionship class provides a curious illustration of the vagaries of modern boxing. Before ie went to America. he was regarded in England as a rather ordinary heavyweight, both Phil Scott and George Cook having bef.en the New Zealander. Emboldened by Heeney’s success in the States, Scott, who had twice beaten him »n England, crossed the Atlantic, but was badly beaten in two out of three fights. The explanat on probably lies in the fact that in Enqland they prefr boxing to fighting, and whereas Heeney did not shine land they prefer boxing to fighting, qualities immediately attracted attention in the American prizering.
