FIRE IN WHANGAREI

DAMAGE BY WATER At midnight on Saturday a fire broke out in Wilkinson’s Buildings, Bank Street, Whangarei. The premises comprised Mr. W illainson’s saddlery shop, Mr. Russell’s piano warehouse, the office of Mr. G. Belin, hardware agent, and the Coronation Tearooms. The outbreak was discovered by Mrs. P. G. Dark, proprietress of the tearooms, who heard an explosion in Mr. Belin’s room across the passage The brigade confined the fire to this room, but Mr. Russell’s shop and the rear portion of Mr. Wilkinson’s workroom were flooded. Pianos and gramophones were removed to the street and escaped damage. Mr. Belin’s stock, which was completely destroyed, was insured for £250.
