TIVOLI
“THE CLAW” “The Claw,” the Universal-Jewel, starring Claire Windsor and Norman Kerry, which made its local premiere at the Tivoli Theatre last night, comes as near being a perfect picture as even the most critical could ask. A great story, by a great author, an all-star cast of players, and a famous director. Norman Kerry and Claire Windsor play the starring roles in the picture, and are ably supported by a sterling cast headed by Arthur Edmund Carew, who, by the way, is fast becoming one of the best actors on the screen, while Kerry’s portrayal in the picture is conceded to be an outstanding characterisation of the year. The story was wfitten by Cynthia Stockley, and appeared a few months ago in the “Cosmopolitan Magazine.” It deals with the trials of a hero-worshipping English girl, who follows a British army officer to the African veldt. How she copes with the conventions of the narrow-minded social set, transplanted to the African village from England, is one of the vivid high lights of the story. Sydney Olcott, to whom the task of directing was handed by Universal, has brought a true portrayal of the story to the screen. His masterful touches show time and again as the plot is unfolded. The supporting cast includes such names as Helene Sullivan, Tom Guise. Nelson McDowell, j Bertram Johns, Dick Sutherland, j Myrta Bonillas, Pauline Neff, Larry ‘ Steers, and others. Monte Blue, star of the picture “Wolf’s Clothing.” has finished work on “The Bush Leaguer,” a base-ball story in which Leila Hyams and Clyde Cook are featured, under the direction of Howard Bretherton. “The Bush Leaguer” is the first of the new 26 Warner Winners for Master Picture release. Monte Blue is now in training for his role in -One Round Hogan,” which will be ready for the cameras shortly.
