Til© coal mines of the Waikato district will close down for the holidays at 4 p.m. on December 23 and re-open on Thursday. January 5. It will probably be January 9 before they are running at full strength, but in the meantime they are working at high pressure to fill requirements for the holiday period. All arrangements are now complete for the Huntlv floral fete and sports, which takes place on Saturday nexi. Mr. K. T. Hill will judge the adult decorative section and Mrs. Hall. Mr. and Mrs. Christie, Mr. and Mrs. Jones, and Mr. and Mrs. Gerring the balance. Additional donations to the carnival were received from the Thistle Football Club. Horticultural Society, Dr. R. C. Macdiarmid and others. Mrs. Parkes’s tender for catering was accepted. The joint secretaries announce that over £7O has been donated toward the funds. Mr. Hyde, Government valuer, is at present revaluing the town and. no doubt, with the big improvements to building in the heart of the township, a substantial increase in values will be recorded.
Messrs. E. A. Jones and E. J. Farrell, local Justices of the Peace, have been appointed to conduct sittings of the court under the Children’s Welfare Act.
