USE OF SPARE TIME

DEFECT OF EDUCATION “A child should not be educated merely for his livelihood, but for his living. Any system of education stands or falls by the use its products make of their spare time.” Mr. J. W. Shaw made this statement in an address on education given to the Council of Christian. Congregations last evening. He criticised the “portmanteaux” or “coal-sack filling” method of cramming a child with facts and said that the most important task of the education system was to give him an appreciation and love of beauty through literature, music and the other arts. * • “Anzac Day is going to drop out soon, I feel sure,” he said, “because the great mass of the people cannot fill in a day. That is a commentary on our system of education. They simply do not know how to fill in 24 hours unless amusement is provided for them. Lack of reverence is not responsible.”
