TAUMARUNUI CHAMBER
MONTHLY MEETING the monthly meeting: of the Taumarunui Chamber of Commerce, the president, Mr. A. S. Laird, explained that the borough council had declined responsibility for maintaining Ngatai Street, leading to the railway trucking yards, and action would have to be taken to the chamber. Mr. Cooper moved, and Mr. C. Davis seconded, that the Railway Department be requested to have the trucking yards removed to a more suitable site, and the Chamber decided to follow this course. Mr. R. W. Smith, M.P., forwarded a letter received from the Minister of Customs regarding the chamber’s request for a revision of the drawback of customs duty on certain imported timber used in the manufacture of containers for dairy and orchard produce. The Minister expressed the view that the importance of the dairying and fruit growing industries necessitated declining a removal of the drawback policy, and the chamber’s request must be declined. In connection with the Wanganui River Road to Te Maire, it was resolved that the chief officer of the Tourist Department be invited to attend the opening of the Te Maire Bridge with the Minister of Public Works, and make an inspection of the route. The Taumarunui Borough Council’s electricity supply facilities were dealt with, from the point of view of sufficiency for growing demands, and it was decided to request the council to allow its electrical engineer and foreman to attend the next meeting of the chamber and discuss electricity and water supply matters with the members.
