OTAHUHU BOROUGH

MEETING OF COUNCIL The Otahuhu Borough Council last night decided to return its war trophy to the Department of Internal Affairs. The district railway engineer asked for advice re the drainage available for the Otahuhu railway workshops. The request was referred to the Water and Drainage Committee to report. The Otahuhu branch of the New Zealand Labour Party received permission to use one of the parks on January 14 and to charge for admission. J. Markwick's complaint of the bad state of the road near his garage was referred to the Works Committee. B. E. Jenkins wrote objecting to the acceptances of tenders for carting, which were not the lowest received. It was decided that the reasons for acceptance be forwarded to the complainant. An application from the fire brigade for the supply of sheets, and keys for the front door and the alteration of lights in the social room was referred to the brigade committee. Six months’ exemption from connection with the sewerage service was allowed to J. McDowell, A. G. Jerrat and H. P. G. Wheeler. J. Wilson, superintendent of the fire brigade, tendered his resignation. It was accepted with regret, and appreciation of his services will be shown in some tangible form. The pumping station engineer reported that for two weeks ending December 4. 2,476,000 gallons of water had been pumped. For the period November 10 to December 8 permits for . new dwellings were Issued to the value of £3,355, other buildings £9,260, alterations £650, plumbing and drainage £235; total, £13,500.

The foreman reported that 38 men were employed on outside work.

The district fund account is in debit £14.828, and the following are in credit: Cemetery, £2l; parks, £10; domain, 16s; drainage, £3,676; septic tanks, £114: waterworks and streets loan, £l6; Mangere, £341; municipal building, £7l; relief of unemployment, £1.243.

The provision of a band stand at the Seaside Park was referred to the

Parks Committee, with power to act. Before declaring the meeting closed, the Mayor extended Christmas greetings to the councillors. This was heartily reciprocated by Mr. T. Clements. deputy-Mayor.
