LAST EVENING’S MEETING PETROL TAX AGAIN At the meeting of the Takapuna Borough Council last evening, a resolution was received from the Wanganui City Council:“That this council protest to the Government that the amount of the proposed petrol tax, 4d a gallon, is excessive. That the tax should be reduced by one-half, and that no exemptions should he granted. Further, that all cities and boroughs within the Dominion be circularised and asked to support the council's resolution." No action was taken. In reply to a letter asking if there is any possibility of Lake Pupuke being vested as a reserve, both for present use as a water reserve and also as a scenic reserve for the future, it was stated that the North Shore Boroughs AVater Board has a comprehensive water-supply scheme under consideration. This will be outside of Lake Pupuke and may result in the lake basin being used for the purposes stated. No definite statement can be made pending deliberations ot the AVater Board.
The by-laws inspector is to report to the council on the regulations under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1924," a draft of which has been sent to the council for constructive criticism. An assistant traffic inspector is being engaged during the week-ends of the holiday season to assist with traffic control. On th,e recommendation of the borough engineer, 243 ft of kerbing and channelling is to be placed in Beresford Street, Bayswater, at a cost of £4O.
The borough offices and works will be closed on December 26 and 27 and January 2 and 3 only. The Takapuna Boating Club stated that the baths at Bayswater are in disrepair and can not be opened this season unless put in a fit state. A lifebuoy is also necessary. The question was referred to tile AVorks Committee. The successful tender of Messrs. Stevenson and Sons for the construction of the Milford storage culvert has been withdrawn owing to the postponement of the date fixed for the beginning of the work. A donation of £5 5s is being given toward the expenses of entertaining the visiting crews of boats competing in the Cornwell Cup contest. A complaint that unlicensed dressing accommodation is in use at Milford Beach was received. It was stated that several young women had used a tent last Sunday. One of the councillors stated that as no charge for admission was being made there was no unfair competition. The inspector is investigating.
