CLERGYMAN’S PROTEST FATAL SHORT STIRRUP Du,ring the past flve years five jockeys have been killed in Auckland. SPEAKING yesterday at the funeral of R. H. Reilly, the latest victim, the Rev. Jasper Calder said that this percentage was too high. “We should not let it go on if it is in our power to stop it,” he said. “The modern boy rides with too short a stirrup, and the use of a short stirrup, particularly in two-year-old races, does not give the rider proper control of his horse.” He appealed for the support of racing bodies and public opinion, to reduce the risk to life. TAKAPUNA FATALITY FUNERAL AT HILLSBOROUGH Yesterday the last tribute was paid to the memory of Mr. R. H. Reilly, the 3'oung jockey who was killed while riding White Wings in the Rakino Handicap at Takapuna on Monday. He was buried at the Hillsborough Cemetery, the city missioner, the Rev. Jasper Calder, conducting the funeral service.

The Takapuna Jockey Club was represented by Messrs. J. N. Heslop and R. T. Michaels, members of the committee, and Mr. F. McVay, the secretary- Messrs. W. S. Spence and C. Brown represented the Auckland Racing Club. Mr. Wenzl Scholium, owner of White Wings, was also present. Fellow jockeys acted as pallbearers.
