ASSAULT ON TOFUA

OFFICER ATTACKED DRUNKEN SAILOR WITH KNIFE NATIVE LIQUOR TOO STRONG HOPPER aged 28, a member of the crew of the S.S. Tofua, while inspired with native brew liquor, obtained at Apia, assaulted his chief engineer' and threatened him with a knife. Hopper pleaded guilty at the Police Court to-day to a charge of assault on the high seas. Mr. Bagnail, who appeared for the shipping company, said that the assault was committed after the ship had left the wharf at; Apia. The officer had been assaulted while in the engine-room, and later' accused was found waiting with a, knife outside the engineer’s cabin. Mr. Allan Moody, xrho appeared for accused, said that tiae offences were committed while he was under the influence of native biww liquor. Hopper was fined £5.
