NOTES FROM THE MANUKAU

The breeze for the opening days of both clubs has been all that could be desired, and more, but no capsizes marred the races. The 14-footers made a name for themselves on Saturday. Sea Gnome captured Mr. Brown’s valuable prize in the cruising club’s race to Cornwallis, and Betty won the yacht club’s harbour race with another 14-tooter, Sea Toiler, placed. Tnat Sea Gnome is a fine little boat was proved when she stuck it out and Pal o’ Mine has not yet raced, but gave the launches a great deal of trouble, especially the Almora. when she got broadside on to the waves. The Waiapu is not sailing the races in the way she was expected to, but after Christmas she should do better. Rosita showed a fair turn of sfceed over the rough water, and but for a breakdown would have made a good showing. The Valencia will be down next Sunday, and, with Pal o’ Mine, should make the racing interesting. . °’ Mine has not ye traced, but if all goes well with her she should pick up a prize or two this season, as her trials seem to be promising. . boat that has not been seen racing yet is Myra. She was going on Sunday. When close-hauled she will be one to be reckoned with when she starts, especially if the weather is light.

Aoraa has not joined either club yet, her owners preferring a quiet cruise round. A good contest should be seen when the boats meet, and special interest will be taken in the meeting of Mermaid and Almora, as both have Fordson engines, though of slightly different, types. Mermaid showed the way ahead of her rival on Saturday, but Almora was towing a heavy dinghy, while Mermaid was without one. Altogether, the prospects for a good season on the western harbour are decidedly pleasing for both clubs.

The cruising club will hold model yacht races for the boys if support is forthcoming. Good prizes have already been donated.
